When a measurement becomes a clinical claim
A distance tool is not a small feature. It is a claim about anatomy.
A distance tool in a medical viewer can look like a small feature.
It is not.
Once the interface displays a value in millimetres, the product is making a claim about the relationship between the image, its metadata and the physical anatomy.
The risk
A measurement may be affected by voxel spacing, image orientation, resampling, the plane in which the measurement is taken, conversion between image and world coordinates, rounding, and incomplete or incorrect metadata.
A visually plausible line can still produce an incorrect value.
My responsibility
I worked with engineering, science and regulatory stakeholders to define how measurement behaviour should be represented and validated.
The design needed to make the tool simple to use without hiding the conditions that made the result reliable.
Key decisions
Treat correctness as part of the interaction
The work did not end with drawing a line and placing a label. The interaction had to account for how the image had been processed and whether the displayed value corresponded correctly to the underlying spatial information.
Avoid implying more certainty than the product could support
The number of decimal places, units and visual treatment all affect perceived authority. The interface needed to communicate useful precision without suggesting that the value was more exact than the data or validation allowed.
Validate behaviour across orientations
Measurement could not be tested only in one view. Axial, sagittal and coronal orientations needed to produce consistent and defensible behaviour, including when switching between orientation conventions.
Design the failure case
When required metadata was missing or unreliable, the product needed a safe response. Displaying no measurement or a clear limitation was preferable to displaying a confident but invalid value.
Why this work matters
In regulated healthcare products, seemingly small interface elements can carry disproportionate risk.
Good design means recognising when a visual detail has become a clinical assertion.
